Install LEXO with uv, pipx, or pip
Install the LEXO desktop app and CLI from PyPI on Windows, macOS, or Linux, check the install, and keep it up to date.
LEXO is a Python package published on PyPI. One install gives you both the lexo command-line tool and the desktop app (lexo gui). Everything it needs, including the Qt toolkit, the PDF engine, and a Myanmar font, comes with the package. There are no separate system dependencies.
There is no standalone installer (.exe, .dmg, or .AppImage). You install LEXO with a Python package tool.
Requirements
- Python 3.11, 3.12, or 3.13. LEXO’s CI tests these versions on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- About as much disk space as any Qt desktop app; PySide6 is the largest dependency.
- An internet connection for the install itself, and later for Google Docs OCR only.
If you don’t have Python, uv can install and manage it for you.
Recommended: uv
uv installs LEXO as an isolated tool and puts lexo on your PATH:
uv tool install lexo
With pipx
pipx does the same job if you already use it:
pipx install lexo
With pip
Any standard Python environment works too. Use a virtual environment if you don’t want LEXO’s dependencies in your global Python:
python -m pip install lexo
Check the install
lexo --version
lexo info
lexo info prints the version and the folders where LEXO keeps its data and configuration. You’ll need the config folder for the Google Cloud setup.
Then launch the desktop app:
lexo gui
Updating
Check whether a newer release is on PyPI:
lexo check-update
The desktop app has the same check under Help → Check for Updates. To upgrade:
uv tool upgrade lexo
# or
pipx upgrade lexo
# or
python -m pip install --upgrade lexo
Release notes are on the changelog.
Uninstalling
uv tool uninstall lexo
# or
pipx uninstall lexo
Run lexo logout first if you signed in to Google, so the token is removed from your OS keychain.
Next steps
- No account needed: try
lexo extracton a digital PDF, or the PDF tools. - For scans: set up Google Docs OCR.
